SEO for Memory Care

GEO Explained: How to Show Up in AI Search Results

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It's the practice of optimizing content so that generative AI systems—ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, and similar tools—find, understand, and recommend you when answering user questions.

The term emerged as AI search grew. Unlike traditional SEO, which optimizes for ranking in a list of links, GEO optimizes for being selected as a source by an AI. The goal is the same: get discovered when families search. The mechanism is different.

How Generative Engines Choose Sources

AI systems don't crawl the web the way Google does. They use training data, web search integrations, and retrieval systems to pull information. When they need to answer a question, they look for content that is:

  • Relevant. Directly addresses the query.
  • Authoritative. From trusted sources with clear expertise.
  • Structured. Easy to parse and extract.
  • Current. Up-to-date and accurate.

Content that fits these criteria is more likely to be cited or recommended. Content that's thin, vague, or poorly structured gets ignored.

GEO Tactics for Senior Living

1. Write for extraction. AI needs to pull specific information. Use clear definitions, direct answers, and structured formats. Put key facts where they're easy to find.

2. Build authority signals. Author bios, credentials, citations to reputable sources. Links from trusted sites. Consistent, accurate information across the web. These signals help AI assess credibility.

3. Use natural language. AI is trained on how people write and search. Content that matches natural question patterns—"What is memory care?" "How do I choose?"—aligns with how AI retrieves information.

4. Be comprehensive. AI often synthesizes from multiple sources. Content that covers a topic thoroughly is more likely to be used than thin overviews.

5. Maintain technical quality. Fast sites, clean structure, schema markup. Technical fundamentals support both traditional SEO and AI discovery.

GEO vs. SEO: Both Matter

GEO isn't a replacement for SEO. It's an extension. The same content quality that ranks in Google—helpful, well-structured, authoritative—tends to get cited by AI. The difference is being intentional about structure and extraction.

For senior living, local SEO remains critical. "Memory care near me" still shows the Local Pack. But for informational queries and for families who use ChatGPT or other AI tools, GEO matters. Optimize for both.
