How to Do SEO for Senior Living: Step-by-Step

SEO for senior living isn't a single project. It's a process. But you have to start somewhere. Here's a step-by-step approach that works for memory care and assisted living communities.

Step 1: Fix the Foundation (Weeks 1–2)

Before you invest in content or links, fix what's broken.

Claim and verify Google Search Console. Connect your site. Submit your sitemap. You need this data to understand how Google sees your site.

Check technical basics. Page speed, mobile usability, HTTPS. Use PageSpeed Insights and fix the biggest issues. Slow, broken sites don't rank.

Audit title tags and meta descriptions. Ensure every important page has a unique title (under 60 characters) and a meta description (under 160). Include your primary keywords and location where relevant.

Claim and optimize Google Business Profile. Complete every section. Add photos, services, attributes. This is non-negotiable for local visibility. See our GBP guide for senior living.

Step 2: Align Content With Search Intent (Weeks 3–6)

Content that doesn't match how families search won't rank. Map your content to the buyer journey.

Research keywords. Use keyword research to find what families actually search for—awareness, consideration, and decision stages. Don't guess.

Audit existing content. What do you have? What's thin or missing? Prioritize high-intent, local terms: "memory care near me," "[city] assisted living," "memory care cost [state]."

Create or expand key pages. Location pages for each market. Service pages (memory care, assisted living). Blog content that answers common questions. Each page should be substantive (500+ words of unique content) and structured for both users and search engines.

Internal linking. Link from your homepage and blog to location and service pages. Help users and Google discover your best content.

Step 3: Build Local Visibility (Ongoing)

For senior living, local SEO drives most inquiries.

Citations. List your community on senior living directories and local business listings. Keep NAP (name, address, phone) consistent everywhere. See senior living citations and NAP consistency.

Reviews. Encourage families to leave reviews. Respond to all of them. Reviews influence rankings and trust.

Local content. Add neighborhood context to location pages. Mention nearby hospitals, family resources, and community features. Unique, local content outperforms generic copy.

Google Business Profile. Post regularly. Update hours, services, and photos. Keep your profile active and accurate. See GBP tips for memory care.

Step 4: Monitor and Iterate (Ongoing)

Track rankings. Use Search Console or a rank-tracking tool. Monitor your priority keywords. Note what improves and what doesn't.

Track conversions. Form fills, calls, tour requests. Rankings without leads don't help occupancy. Attribute conversions to organic search where possible.

Update and expand. Add new content. Refresh old content. Fix broken links. Google rewards sites that stay current.

Adjust based on data. Double down on what works. Fix or retire what doesn't. SEO is iterative.

This process takes time. Most communities see meaningful improvement in 3–6 months. For a detailed audit framework, see our senior living SEO checklist and how to audit your senior living website. Ready for help? Request a strategy call.
